Description in detail:
Day 1
In the late afternoon our guests will be picked up from Akureyri. We drive them to our farmhouse Grytubakki, have dinner and discuss the next days.
Overnight.
Day 2
By bus we drive through the picturesque valley of Fnjóskádalur to Fremstafell, where the horses wait for us.
We move the herd together, saddle our horses and after a short introduction we ride up to mountain Kinnafell in about 200metres of altitude. From here we have a wonderful view into two directions. To the North we see out to the sea at Húsavik and to South we discover the well known and historic waterfall Gođafoss. Under us river Skjáfandafljót, Icelands fourth biggest river. After the lunch break we ride through thick wood Fellskógur back to Fremstafell. Vis – á –vis the forest we can see the island of Ţingey, which has been an ancient place of parliament, established around the year 963. On the island you still find some archeologic remainders of this time.
We are about 4 – 5 hours in saddle.
We leave the horses on the pasture-ground at Fremstell and drive with the bus back to Grýtubakki.
Dinner and Overnight.
Day 3
After a good breakfast we pack our things and drive with the bus to the horses. Today we will ride with a herd of freely running horses, a special experience!
In gentle trott and tölt we ride into the valley of Bardardalur, through which flows river Skjálfandafljót. At the right side raise up to 700 m high basaltic mountains and the whole area is covered by lava, more than 7.000 years old! The valley is supposed to be one of the longest still inhabited valleys of Iceland. The difference between the farm most at the south to the one most at the north is more than 40km.
Our aim today is the school of Kiđagil, where we will have dinner and stay overnight.
Also today we are about 4 – 5 hours in saddle.
Day 4
After breakfast we move the herd of horses together on the big field close to the river. Also today we will ride with a herd of freely running horses.
On smooth paths we ride along river Skjáfandafljót direction entrance of the valley. The wild beauty of this river and the landscape affects everybody! Soon we will see the foam of waterfall Gođafoss.
Back at Fremstafell we say our good-byes to the horses and enjoy a short visit to waterfall Gođafoss.
We drive back to farmhouse Grýtubakki, have dinner and stay overnight.
Day 5
After breakfast we drive our guests back to Akuryeri and say good bye.
